Thrills, Chills and Surprises at the 'DWTS' Premiere!
From "The Bachelor" heroine Melissa RyCroft to Denise Richards and Lawrence Taylor, Steve Wozniak, Belinda Carlisle, Lil' Kim and Steve-O, athletes, actors, singers, an inventor and one legitimate "Jackass" came together for the exciting premiere of the eighth season of "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC Monday night in Hollywood. Read on for the not-so-quick-step recap! The first dance of the season was delivered by Grammy winner/rapper Lil' Kim and her partner and last year's champ, Derek Hough. "I'm dedicating this first dance to all my girls in the federal detention center," said Kim before they did the cha-cha-cha to Janet Jackson's "Nasty." After their first whirl, Judge Len Goodman declared, "Overall I thought it was first class. It does need a little more refining. Good job, well done." Bruno Tonioli said, "Nasty, but tasty. You could work wonders with that tushy. I can't wait to see next week." And Carrie Ann Inaba added, "I think you've got great potential. Just let it out." All three judges awarded the couple sevens, for a total score of 21 out of 30. Go-Gos singer Belinda Carlisle and Jonathan Roberts danced a sweet waltz to Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now is Love." Bruno frowned, "On that first spin you looked like Julie Andrews at her most regal -- then you turned into Cloris Leachman. You really have to work on that." He gave them a 5. Carrie Ann said, "I think you need to work on trusting Jonathan. You've got a great partner -- let him lead you." She gave them a 6, as did Len, who said, "I thought you did a good job on a very difficult dance."

She gave them a 6, as did Len, who said, "I thought you did a good job on a very difficult dance." NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska found their groove on the ballroom floor dancing the cha-cha-cha to Edwin Starr's Motown hit "25 Miles," but the judges weren't so kind. "I know you're a defensive player, but you gotta bring on the offense," said Carrie Ann, throwing out a 6. Bruno said, "I think you have something in you. You've got to attack it," giving out a 5. And Len had some issues, but said, "I enjoyed watching it. It was fun. Well done." He gave them a 5 for a total of 16. Dressed in a pinstripe suit, "Jackass" star Steve-O teamed up with "the rebel of the dance floor," Lacey Schwimmer, to dance the waltz to the strains of 'The Godfather' soundtrack. Len commended, "You came out fully committed and tried your utmost, but technically there was a lot going on that wasn't the ticket. I was expecting much worse." He awarded them a 5. Bruno said, "The technique wasn't very good, but you did come out and perform." He gave them a 6. And Carrie Ann enthused, "I was oddly mesmerized by the beauty. You have an incredible determination which is inspiring to watch." She gave them a 6, for a total of 17. 'Sex and the City' movie star Gilles Marini, the "naked guy next door," joined former "DWTS" champ Cheryl Burke to deliver a sexy, energetic cha-cha-cha to Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love." Carrie Ann gushed, "You have great potential on this show. Fantastic. Great job!" Len raved, "You pulled it off tonight; it was absolutely fabulous. Well done." And Bruno shouted, "Clothes on or clothes off, you certainly know how to strut your stuff. I'm looking for explosions!" All three judges awarded the couple eights for a total of 24, the best score of the night. Country singer Chuck Wicks and girlfriend/partner Julianne Hough are the first off-screen couple to dance together on the floor in competition. The pair worked hard on a romantic waltz to a country version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight" made famous by Elvis. "I think you may be one of the most graceful men on the show ever," said Carrie Ann. "You have a lot of potential -- the chemistry is great." She gave them a 6. "It was a bit hectic," said Len. "You've got to work on refining your dancing." He gave them a 7. And Bruno said, "Looking good at times, but at times it felt like you were chasing her. You've got to come down a little bit, because you have what it takes. Easy man, easy." He gave them a 7 for a total for 20. Playboy Playmate and last-minute replacement star Holly Madison had just days to learn the cha-cha-cha with Dmitry Chaplin, moving to "Just Dance" by Lady GaGa. All of the judges took into account the fact that she had little time to prepare, with Carrie Ann pointing out, "You're kind of like a newborn deer with the wobbly legs." Bruno encouraged, "Some of the sections were actually quite good. There is hope, my darling. Keep working hard." And Len said, "I'm sure you're going to come out and be fabulous next week." All three judges delivered a score of 6 for a total of 18. Pro rodeo rider Ty Murray, the husband of singer Jewel who had to bow out due to injuries lassoed pro dancer Chelsie Hightower for a high-energy cha-cha-cha to "Train in Vain" by The Clash. Carrie Ann said, "I think you're one cute cowboy. Your dancing, yeah, we're going to work on that." She added, however, that together they are "contagious to watch" and gave them a 5. Bruno warned, "It looked more like an army drill than a cha-cha-cha. There is always next week." He gave them a 4, as did Len, who commended Ty with, "You did come out and try beyond your comfort level." Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, the youngest person to perform on "DWTS" at 17 years old, teamed up with Mark Ballas to waltz to the ballad "It is You I Have Loved." "Surprisingly refined for someone so young," said Bruno, who gave them a 7. Carrie Ann said, "I was truly moved. You're very dynamic when you perform," and gave them an 8. Len commented, "I found the whole thing very appealing. Overall, it was fantastic." With another 8, the couple earned a solid score of 23. Sporting a pink boa, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and pro dancer Karina Smirnoff worked out a cha-cha-cha to Bachman Turner Overdrive's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." "It was like watching a Teletubby going mad," complained Bruno. Len was slightly more charitable, saying, "The good news, first of all, is it held my attention throughout. But overall it was a disaster." Carrie Ann was the most encouraging, saying, "I think that you are what this competition is all about. You're definitely going out on a limb. You make us want to cheer for you." With respective scores of 4, 4 and 5, Steve's spirit remained high, saying he was having the time of his life. Funnyman David Alan Grier and Kym Johnson got off on the right foot with their waltz to Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life." "I didn't know you could dance like that," said Carrie Ann, who warned, "You have to be careful with the facial expressions -- it does tend to distract from your body, which was very neat and nice." She gave the couple a 6, as did Bruno, who was also down on David's myriad of expressions, saying, "One character will suffice." Len, however, focused on a different area: "Your bum sticks out a bit, but overall I thought it was very commendable." He gave them a 7 for a total of 19. Actress and former Bond girl Denise Richards and "bad boy of the ballroom" Maksim Chmerkovskiy got their cha-cha-cha on to "Nothin' But a Good Time" by Poison, but Denise's nerves were clearly showing. "You look terrified out there, and it's confusing because you've got great potential," said Carrie Ann. Bruno said, "You have it, but you don't know what to do with it. You've got to dig in deep and come out and deliver. I know there is something there." Len agreed, saying, "It looks like Maks is pulling you around." All three judges awarded them sixes, for a total score of 18. And brought in just this past Friday as a last-minute replacement with only 48 hours to prepare, "The Bachelor" star Melissa Rycroft rebounded strongly on the ballroom floor from her national break-up on TV last week. Dancing the waltz to "Moon River" with Tony Dovolani, she really caught the attention of the audience and judges. "'The Bachelor''s loss is 'Dancing with the Stars'' gain," said Len, who gave them a 7. Bruno agreed: "I don't know about your guy, but he's a loser," he chirped. "You're a revelation. It was like watching a beautiful bird take flight." He gave them an 8, as did Carrie Ann, who cheered, "I thought you did a wonderful job. You're just a beautiful dancer. I look forward to seeing what you do." Watch "The Insider" for more highlights and all the latest "Dancing with the Stars" news, on the dance floor and off!Read full story on The Insider
